I’m not sure whether you’ve all seen this (or should I say; both seen this).

I was pleased with it. But obviously the real judges were less than pleased.

Please note:

sparkles on the water at the beginning.
impressive colour quality from my new video camera (well, it’s 6months or so old)
very impressive impersonations

No, not really… this is not a Patricia Piccinini work. This a photo of my late cat Chuck which was in the newspaper in 1996.

Surrogate for the northern hairynosed wombat

This work is quite brilliant. However it has a very creepy quality to it. There is such amazing detail in these figures.

I don’t think I can say that I would have one of these in my house but they do impress me. I love just how disgusting yet incredibly detailed they are.

Architectural Fact of the Week #2 (Mendelssohn vs. Mendelsohn)

18 09 2009

Felix Mendelssohn was a composer during the early Romantic Period.
Some of his work includes symphonies, chamber music, concerti.
His most recognised piece would have to be Wedding March written in 1843 for the incidental music in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 17 years after the overture was written.

You’re probably sitting there wondering why this has anything to do with Architecture.

…and you’re pretty much right.

And yet now I go and mention: E=mc2.
Then you wonder (as you read this sentence) why is Albert Einstein being mentioned…
What does he have to do with architecture, or music?

Adolf Hitler needs, also, a mention.

Wha-!? You say…

It all becomes clear(ish):

There is an architect named Erich Mendelsohn who designed the Einstein Tower (1919-21) in Potsdam, Germany.
It’s an observatory that’s a part of the Astro-Physical Institute.

Einstein Tower (German:Babelsberg Einsteinturm)

The exterior of the building was originally seen as being concrete, however construction difficulties created problems and it was built with brick and covered with stucco.

Einstein Tower Sketch

This early sketch is an amazing way of seeing an architect’s vision come to fruition. The building is still an observatory today.
Mendelssohn (composer): February 3, 1809 – November 4, 1847
Mendelsohn (architect): March 21 1887 – Spetember 15 1953

The filth that is a cigarette

18 09 2009

I saw a man and a woman sitting next to each other, one was holding a less than 3 month year old baby.
I was disgusted to see that both adults were smoking while this baby was sitting there having to inhale the filth.

Those of you who know me would know that I despise cigarettes and I will be openly (and loudly) frustrated and disgusted if someone smokes near me.
I personally think it is one of the most disgusting (wow, I’ve said that word a lot) things that is accepted in society. Feel free to tell me other things that are disgusting
and accepted, but this is gross.

It does no one, I repeat; NO ONE, any benefits.

It doesn’t make you look cool.
You smell appalling, all the time.
You’re teeth go yellow and black.
You’re fingernails go yellow and brown.
You smell appalling! (I really want to emphasise this. No amount of chewing gum or diet coke will fix it)
It costs a ridiculous amount of money. (This is something that I couldn’t care less about how much tax the government puts on)
Whoop-dee-doo; you lose weight. But your just stacking on the cancer.

Get the hint. Smoke near me and I’ll tell I don’t like it.
But I don’t have a problem with you, I just hate cigarettes.
Hey! I may even like you, but I don’t like cigarettes.

However, when I see people smoking with a baby or while they’re pregnant; I have a problem with you.

Have a good week! Go cats…

Architectural Fact of the Week

11 09 2009

Yeah, yeah we all know that the World Trade Centre Twin Towers was made of vertical steel mullions 45cm apart. (Everyone knows that!)
It made for quite a plain looking, Gothic building of enormous proportions.

Yet many of you may not know that the designer, Minoru Yamasaki, suffered from Acrophobia (often mistaken for Vertigo); an extreme or irrational fear of heights.
These steel members framed the windows from the ground floors all the way to the top.
He wanted the occupants inside the building to feel more secure which is why the windows are so narrow.

While on the same topic, I find it interesting to note that just two months before September 11th 2001 Larry Silverstein bought the World Trade Center (7 buildings in total) for $3.2 billion.
